2012 Penny Wars for Water.org

water.org

The Wolf Creek Penny Wars contest was held at the end of last term to raise funds for Water.org an organization seeking a day when everyone in the world can take a safe drink of water. Can you imagine your life without safe water? Students were divided into teams by their learning managers and spent the next two weeks bringing in handfuls of coins. Pennies counted as positive points and anything other than a penny counted as negative points.  The winners of this year’s Penny Wars went to Sandy Flint’s students with a total of $4.66.  They will celebrate their victory with a pizza party. Our grand total raised was $98.47 and additional donations were added to bring this up to $100 reaching our goal. Special thanks to all students who participated.  Our money will bring 4 people clean and safe drinking water for life! To learn more about the organization visit water.org.

What Does an Online High School Student Look Like at Wolf Creek?

Now a days you can do everything online from grocery shopping to making doctor appointments.  It should be no surprise that our local community boasts one of the most reputable and successful online high school programs in the state.  Many students in the community are choosing to earn high school credits through an online school option called Wolf Creek Online High School.  Hear about our program from one of our own students.
Raya Hunt has been a student at Wolf Creek Online High School for the past two years.  As this spring approaches Raya is getting ready to graduate like many seniors this year.  Reflecting on her time as an online learner she explains, “I came to Wolf Creek because I work better and faster by myself without so many distractions.”  Raya was referred to the charter school in Chisago City by a close friend stating, “I wouldn’t be able to go back to a traditional school.  I feel better about the coursework and I’m learning faster.”

As society becomes more dependent on technology based education many high school students are encouraged to take some online classes to prepare for post-secondary options.  A study conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group showed nearly one-third of all students in higher education were enrolled in at least one online course during fall term 2010.  Secondary students are investigating the benefits to an online education but question the lack of face to face interactions between teachers and students.  That is why Wolf Creek has developed a program for High School students to work 100% online with the option of working on campus where teachers are available to help in person two days a week.  Wolf Creek is a year round school option and offers incredible summer opportunities for local students.

Senior Raya Hunt explains, “Teachers at Wolf Creek don’t feel like teachers, they are more than that to me.  They helped me find myself and helped me figure out what I wanted to do.”  Raya will be attending The Art Institutes International Minnesota this coming fall.  Wolf Creek Online High School is proud of Ms. Hunt and happy to have given her the tools she needs to pursue her dreams.

For the second year Wolf Creek Online High School collected toys for the US Marines Toys for Tots campaign.  “We collected more toys this year than last and hope that trend continues into next year,” said Lindsay Jarombek, the organizer of the drive.  Wolf Creek Students and faculty members delivered the toys on December 6th and were featured on the KARE 11 newscast.  Student representative, Raya Hunt, spoke on behalf of the school and highlighted the Teens for Teens campaign.  Often Toys for Tots runs low on gifts appropriate for teenagers and this year Wolf Creek was mindful of that and pushed for teen donations.  Wolf Creek would like to thank all of the students who generously donated this year!

Guest Speaker Delivers Important Message to Students

On Thursday December 1st 2011, guest speaker Tom Warth was welcomed by students, faculty, and members of the community at Wolf Creek High School in Chisago City.  Warth, the founder of Books for Africa, delivered several important messages to the students about the importance of giving, working hard, and creating multiple opportunities for success.  Warth shared incredible stories from a lifetime of adventures and journeys with an impressive slideshow featuring images from his many trips to Africa.  Those in attendance learned a great deal about the organization Books for Africa and how it began.  Thanks to Mr. Warth, BFA has sent over 25 million books to countries in Africa.
